The Secret Window: Pleasantly surprised

The Secret window; is based on Stephen King’s short story from a collection the book Four Past Midnight: was pleasantly surprising. Thou we are all a little tired of Stephen kings novels being brought to the big screen I expected another typical sci-fi thriller. However after reading the story I was not immensely impressed and I did not see this becoming a major motion picture. Then Johnny Depp signed for the lead role of Mort Rainy. Well this in its self is a declaration that this movie was going to anything but a typical sci-fi thriller with a kooky ending.
Though this was my first time to a advanced showing this movie started out with a bang (I don’t know if it was the lack of commercials and the 15 minutes of previews for up coming movies that normally have no appeal to me).Actually this is the first detail to differ from the book and it is then said that one can not critique a movie from a book but rather reflect on it after. Nonetheless it is hard to make an unbiased opinion on a movie when you have read the origin for the idea.
The movies star Johnny Depp really stole the show. This would be anything but surprising due to the fact that this movie is all about that author Mort Rainy; who he portrays perfectly from King’s description. A timid and bit of a coward author who is accused of plagiarism (every author’s worst nightmare). While at the time of the accusation; he is also going though a difficult divorce incited when Mort finds his wife in bed with another man. Ladies many of you might ask what woman in her right mind would ever kick Johnny Depp out of bed. However this lady is Amy played my Maria Bello who did a decent job until the end in her final scene (I won’t give it away) where she might as well not been there at all. Shooter is played by John Turturro who is… well he plays a character with very little character, which remains expressionless throughout the whole movie. But that’s it really, there are the three actors and considering Amy or Shooter any part of this movie is a little bit of a push.
Though I am a devoted Johnny Depp fan though and though; I was stunned by his amazing performance. With the success of Depp’s Pirates it was a hard act to follow. However with the quality of this role, I think that we will be expecting more varied and serious roles throughout the remainder of his career, they will still be a little ‘odd’ ballish but I don’t think that he’ll de disappointing any of his fans anytime soon. I was worried that this movie would not have enough substance to make it successful in theaters but pleasantly surprised; Depp’s performance brings the character to life and gives the movie meaning. Though Depp brought Mort to the screen I don’t think that is screaming Oscar any time soon. He did an outstanding job and credit is given but the role is not serious enough for those Hollywood academy people. What can be noted for a consideration for an award is David Koepp’s direction. Koepp is also responsible for the screen play. This adapted screenplay could of been washed out very easily considering that the short story is detailed but not dense. Koepp kept the audience focused and captivated their attention with unusual composition of scenes and camera angles. That alone stood out to me as Depp’s astonishing performance.
Though it is classified as a horror movie don’t expect to be scared. Personally I’m a coward when in comes to movies and there are two scenes that many make you want to close your eyes but not worthy of the horror hype that this movie has received. It is more of a mutt of genres comedy, drama and a little horror to spice it up.

DEPP LOOKS FORWARD TO 'PIRATES' SEQUEL: Johnny Depp is ready to smear on the kohl and step into his pirates outfit to appear in a sequel to "The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

Depp, who garnered a best actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of swashbuckling character Captain Jack Sparrow -- a role he based on Rolling Stone Keith Richards -- misses the role and says he wants to start filming a follow-up to the hit 2003 film.

Depp explains, "I went through a decompression period after the first film. If you're really connected with a character, you always do to some degree. You miss the guy. You miss being that person. The only thing that was in the back of my mind was the hope that there would be a sequel some day, so that I could meet him again."
